Hospitality Smart Skills Training

During the first and second weeks of this term, a group of year 11 and 12 Hospitality students reported to the bar of the Home Hill Bowls Club to complete their Bar Course for Vocational Education and Training. The students that completed the training were Katherine Free, Abbey Brennan, Crystal Baillie, Juanita Kelly, Bronishar Post, Samantha Gosling, Lakisha Barba, Eilish Farris, Ashlea Gaia Thomas, Emily Bonanno, Shari Hankin, Zoe Brierley and Clay Brush.  There was lots of hands-on experience and a stimulating learning environment.

Firstly the students completed a module in “Responsible Service of Alcohol” and then they went on to complete “Clean and Tidy Bar”, “Operate a Bar” and “Provide Responsible Gaming Service”.

Experienced trainer and assessor Stuart Dawe from private provider “Smart Skills Developing People” commenced the week with a very inexperienced team of workers. After 5 days of training from 8.30am to 4.00pm each day the students were allowed to develop and refine their skills sufficiently to allow them to host an informal function for Thursday bowlers, teachers, family and  friends at the Bowls Club. This was an excellent opportunity for the guests to sit back, relax and admire their expertise.

The year 12s have already completed restaurant service in 2015 and year 11s will be able to complete this training in 2017. Many of the students are presently in work placement in Burdekin Hospitality venues where they are using their restaurant and/or bar skills. This provides excellent opportunity for part time work while at uni or full time work after leaving school. All of these students received their certificates of competency on parade this week.
