Home Hill is uniquely placed on the rich alluvial soils of the Burdekin River delta and fed by the second largest underground aquifers in the world. Because of these exceptional farming conditions the Burdekin is renowned for its sugar and vegetable production. The Home Hill district has much to offer with the Burdekin River on its doorstep, north and south connected by the “Silver Link”, the Burdekin Bridge; amazing fishing; the unparalleled holiday destination, Cape Upstart; warm, sunny days year round and excellent educational opportunities.

Home Hill State High School opened in 1964 in response to the community’s need to have a high school on the southern side of the Burdekin River. Prior to the opening of the new school, students had to travel to Ayr by bus to complete their senior schooling.

The new school was fortunate to have the backing of an enthusiastic community and this association endures today. The school has become an integral part of Home Hill and continues to strengthen this relationship by encouraging students and staff to become involved in community-based activities such as the Red Shield Appeal, The Grower Race Day clean-up, ANZAC Day parades and many others. In fact the school’s support of many of these events assures their continuation and adds strength to our community.
