ZONTA Internation womens Day

On Sunday morning, 9th March 2025, a remarkable group of women gathered in Ayr to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) at a special brunch event. Attendees included Grace Ogomeni, Christiana Bugeja, Khiara Turner, Isla Wilkie, Sue-Ann Wilkie, Louise Nicholas, Vicky Flynn, Lisa Todeschino, Stella Karagkiozis, and Samantha Kelly. We also had a very special guest join us for a catchup, past teacher Miss Danielle Chappell. The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of gender equality and the role of both men and women in driving meaningful change.

This year’s IWD theme, Accelerate Action and Equality, was brought to life through inspiring speeches from influential women who emphasised the need for collaboration in breaking down barriers. Their message was clear: we must work together, support one another, and take active steps toward creating a more inclusive and equitable world.

A key takeaway from the morning was a call to live with purpose—embracing activities that bring joy, maintaining mental and physical health, and taking proactive steps to foster positive change. “We are here in this life for only a short moment. Fill your life with the things that make your heart sing. Have regular health checks, do things that keep you mentally healthy, and support others to do the same. Stop waiting for change and make it happen.”

A special highlight of the event was the recognition of Isla Wilkie, who received an STEM award for her dedication and contributions to her school, studies and community. Congratulations, Isla! 👏

The impact of STEM in shaping future careers was also a focal point of the discussions. STEM Changemakers, a program aimed at engaging students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, was highlighted as a key initiative to equip young people with the skills and knowledge necessary for future success.

Thank you to the Zonta Club Burdekin for hosting such a meaningful and uplifting event. It was an honour to be part of a celebration that not only recognised the achievements of women but also reinforced the collective responsibility we all share in accelerating progress toward equality.
