On Tuesday, 9 February, the school hosted the annual Leaders’ Investiture at the Memorial Hall. It was a time to contemplate the coming year and the challenges that leadership can throw at the people who take on these rolls. To quote a famous US President, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” JFK challenged every American to contribute in some way to the public good. This aligns with the school’s motto – Finis Coronat Opus – the End Crowns the Work. If everyone works together, for the betterment of the school, then this small, rural high school can, and will, deliver great achievements. Leadership is about contributing to the public good, and that is what every leader made an oath to do – whether they be a School Captain, Executive member of the Student Council, a Form Class Representative, House Captain or a Senior student – lead the school by example.
Those recognised on the day, did so in front of the whole school community – staff, students and parents/carers – as well as Burdekin Mayor, Ms Lyn McLaughlin, who assisted in presenting badges. We were also privileged enough to have leadership from Home Hill State School represented, and Mrs Christine Loizou, our P&C President present on the day.
Sophie Law, the 2020 School Dux, was also recognised for her academic achievements from last year.
The whole crowd was entertained by Malcolm Balmer, who was a hit with his guitar playing.
The ceremony went off without a hitch, and we look forward to a successful 2021, with our leaders playing an integral part of that success.
